Alright, back to Star Wars! Although we cover most of our thoughts in the episode, here’s a couple more things that elaborate on a couple of points we touched on. Javier brings up a line stating that Jabba the Hut was originally supposed to be a human. Here is what George Lucas said about this scene a special features CD-ROM called ‘Making Magic‘:
“When I first shot the scene with Jabba the Hutt, I knew I was going to create some kind of stop-motion creature…I had to have somebody–an actor–play the part so Harrison had someone to play against, so we just picked a big guy and put him in a fuzzy vest. I, at that point, felt that he may be a character somewhat like Chewbacca, a big furry character. We shot that. As we were cutting the movie, [we] realized relatively quickly that we didn’t have the time or the money to actually shoot that scene [the stop-motion optical]. That ILM was pressed way beyond what it could pull off as it was. So I had to abandon that sequence pretty early on. I had to cut back on special effects shots and that sort of thing because ILM just couldn’t handle it.”
There’s tons of speculation on whether that statement is true because the actor playing the “stand-in” Jabba was wearing a full costume. There’s also a lot more information about how a puppet for Jabba hadn’t even been created since the original concept was to have him be an actual man. What are your thoughts on this? Regarding the “Han shot first” thing, Mario is correct. In the original version of the movie, Han is actually the only one that shoots! The movie was changed to allow for future character development to not make Han look like an assassin. The scene was actually changed twice. The first edit made Greedo shoot first and he misses before Han shoots back in self-defense. In the second edit, Han and Greedo shoot at “the exact same time” (even though if you slow the frames down, Greedo actually shoots first). Thoughts?

I have to admit, listening to the podcast this morning, I got extremely nervous. I was afraid that Heyzen especially, wasn’t going to like Star Wars and that I was going to have to stop listening entirely. In fact, I was thinking that I was going to have to become an anti-podketeers enthusiast. Thank goodness you all liked the movie! I literally had thoughts of an anti-podketeers Facebook page, a website, picket signs, etc. Truly I am grateful that A New Hope was enjoyable for you all, because the alternative seemed like a lot of work! It does make me a little sad, though, to know that you guys didn’t grow up watching them. My parents had me watching these movies back in the early 80’s and I am forever grateful that they did. My childhood wouldn’t have been the same. Great podcast this week and hope you get better soon. (We’ve been dealing with the flu/cold between my girlfriend and I, so I can sympathize.)

Wow! I’m glad I liked it. Last thing we need are picket signs. 😉 SI have to admit that I’m glad that I liked it too because I was really nervous going into it. I can’t begin to tell you how glad I am that it superseded my “expectations”. Can’t wait for Episode 5 and 6! 😀 Of the original trilogy which is your favorite?

Yay no anti – podketeers! Thrilled we liked it then… I grew up watching Clint Eastwood, Bruce Lee and Sylvester Stallone movies with my dad. He never gave sci-fi a chance.
Javier and Heyzen have REDEEMED themselves! I was prepared for you both to be negative with your review of episode 4. I couldn’t be happier to hear the delight coming out in your tone of voice.
So after hearing Heyzen say he got to hear the Cantina Band music and enjoying it, I wanted to share a tip. At Tomorrowland Terrace you will hear the music and more before Jedi Academy and when it rains. That’s something I discovered a few years back, nice little gem.
I am SO glad Javier is very excited and now understand our excitement for episode 7. Lesson of the day, don’t judge until you know what it’s about…or have some knowledge behind the subject.
Dodger Stadium as #2 for most geocached location on the planet?! HELL YEAH! There are tours and events that do happen between baseball season and also after the season has ended. Infact they have tours mostly everyday unless it’s not available for an event. I’ve been on their tour about 5x, so imagine how many others have done so. Let alone Dodger Stadium does hold a VERY high number of seating. Take all that and it’s no wonder why it’s #2 spot behind Disneyland. I’m very happy about that. If you guessed it by now I am a 3rd generation fan who bleeds blue.
Redeemed! Oh yeah!… sounds like a unlocked achievement lol. I truly loved Ep IV… might rewatch it soon.

Didn’t know about the tours at Dodger stadium had tours. That would definitely help explain the tags this past year. Make sure you cote when the poll *finally* goes up. 🙂 (Yeah, it’s coming)

Secondly, I am so happy and relieved you guys liked the movies. It’s about damn time! So many wasted years! At least you watched it at a time when you weren’t being all contrarian. LOL
I’m glad you clear it up in your blog about the Han Shot First movement because that has always been my understanding. I’d never ever heard the flipped frame theory.
How good is the music too? MAN I love John Williams!
And when you’re done I hope you give Spaceballs another chance, Heyzen. You can’t watch a parody concert without first watching the source material. It’s just not right. Not that it will change your opinion any, but still.

I do intend to give Spaceballs another shot once I watch Episodes 5 and 6. Although I got all the references the first time I saw it, I hope to have a better appreciation for them this time around. We’ll see. 🙂
